Song of the Day: September 04, 2019 - "Limelight" by Partner - covering Rush

September 04, 2019 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

I knee-deep in Polaris Prize research (you knew I am going to be part of this year’s grand jury right?!) and this email popped up with a new Polaris Cover by last year’s short listed band Partner!

The band covered Rush’s song “Limelight” for the Polaris Heritage Prize, and are now heading out on a big fall tour, with Europe in September and America in November!

Check it out below!

Song of the Day: August 21, 2019 - "Swan Dive" by Chersea

August 21, 2019 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Last week we got a brand new song from Vancouver’s looper (and blog-favourite) Chersea!

Her powerfully haunting vocals drive the new song, “Swan Dive”, which “explores the beauty in triumphing the call of the void while simultaneously acknowledging the alluring nature of the pain that brought you there in the first place.”

Have a listen below, or check out the lyric video above, AND make sure to mark August 30 on your calendar to check her out live at the Fox Cabaret.

Song of the Day: August 07, 2019 - "The Past" by Rich Aucoin

August 07, 2019 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Okay, if you’re on your computer, open this up on your phone…but either way, put your headphones in!

Rich Aucoin just released this new video for his song “The Past” (from his latest release, Release) and it’s a 360 VR experience. Rich made the song entirely using his mouth and body as the instruments & vocals, and in this video, when you move around the sound from each particular mouth gets louder!
How cool is that!?

Rich is about to head out on tour, and like I mentioned in his other songs of the day(s), he’s going to be here in Vancouver with us on Halloween at the Biltmore. See you there!

Song of the Day: August 02, 2019 - "Falling Down The Stairs Of Your Smile" by The New Pornographers

August 02, 2019 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

The best possible way to wake up on a Friday morning is with new music from The New Pornographers.

“Falling Down The Stairs Of Your Smile” is the first single from the upcoming album In The Morse Code Of Brake Lights. The single is peak power-pop New Pornos, with the catchiest hooks and amazing vocals.

If this is just the first tease, I can’t wait for the full album, due out September 27

Song of the Day: August 01, 2019 - "Fractured State" by Tourist Company

August 01, 2019 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

While we’re going to have to wait a little bit for the full album (scheduled for 2020), Tourist Company released the second song from their sophomore release last week. “Fractured State” is a soaring track with a bit of a dark side, as vocalist/guitarist Taylor Swindells says it was partially inspired by the riots in Charlottesville.

“I remember watching news footage and feeling lost at the state of humanity. In that moment, the world felt broken. There were so many lines of tension running through the plot points of current events, and the present seemed to be predictably spiraling out of control. Essentially the song is about that emotional tension and the pressures of living in a world that feels like it’s falling apart.”

Take a listen (and look) at the lyrics video below, and when you come see Rich Aucoin at the Biltmore on October 31st — as you should already be planning to — make sure you’re there early, since they were just added as support!

Song of the Day: July 31, 2019 - "Breaking Down" by iskwē

July 31, 2019 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Last week we got another tease at the new album, achakosuk, from iskwē. The latest single is “Breaking Down”, and iskwē says it’s about “freeing yourself of a toxic relationship to find your sense of self and your personal strength” but also that there’s a deeper meaning in the song, if you listen closely.

The incredibly powerful (and a little haunting) video is directed by Jessica Lea Fleming, and features dancers of all backgrounds, each representing different communities. Have a look & listen below, make sure you make a note on November 8th to pick up the new album.

Song of the Day: July 30, 2019 - "War On This World" by Jody Glenham

July 30, 2019 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

It’s been a minute since we heard something new from Jody Glenham, but this past week we got a brand new single from the Vancouver musician!

“War On This World” starts in a slow, dreamy haze but gradually ramps the intensity, all while Jody’s haunting vocals go from timidly asking “What are you feeling?” to indignantly demanding “What are you doing?”

Have a listen below!

Song of the Day: July 29, 2019 - "Bones" by Piper Cole

July 29, 2019 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Vancouver musician Piper Cole released her latest album Wildish on July 5th and today’s Song Of The Day was her release “Bones” from back in June (it’s been a busy summer!).

Cole produced her album (with co-producer Dan Klenner) and the video for “Bones” features flamenco dancing as a visual representation of the track’s themes of self-expression and inner oppression.

You can catch Piper next at Trees in Vancouver on August 16th or at Deep Cove Coffee House on October 11th.
