Song of the Day: April 19, 2019 - "I Can't Remember My Name" by Snotty Nose Rez Kids

April 19, 2019 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Less than a month until the new Snotty Nose Rez Kids album Trapline is released (May 10th), and we just received another single AND a spectacular video to boot.

“I Can’t Remember My Name”, which also features Shanks Sioux, is an anthem that the band describes like this:
”I Can’t Remember My Name suggests we are lost and don’t understand our position in this new world, but the lyrics tell the opposite. Instead of being consumed by society, we preserve everything that makes us Indigenous by staying true to ourselves through all the bullshit.”

I can’t wait to hear the whole album, and already have May 30th circled on my calendar for their performance at Fortune Sound Club!

Song of the Day: April 6, 2019 - "Suffering for You" by Skye Wallace

April 06, 2019 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

We got some new Skye Wallace the other day, and it is a perfect song for a dreary, rainy weekend morning.

“Suffering for You” is the latest single off her upcoming self-titled album, due out June 7. The dark and haunting song was “written during my time as the Dawson City Music Festival’s songwriter in residence in the Yukon.” says Skye. “I was there for the month of January in a big (potentially haunted) heritage house by myself, with very few hours of daylight, and a wealth of history and inspiration to prompt me to write. The song was inspired by the story of a group of people who were separated from their expedition, trapped on an ice floe in the arctic for months.”

Song of the Day: April 5, 2019 - "Catching Feelings" by Mathew V

April 05, 2019 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Got a song for your Friday morning dance break!

”Catching Feelings” by Mathew V is his latest single and the first new music we’ve got from him since his debut album (The Fifth) was released around this time last year!

If this is any indication of what we’re going to get for the next album, I’m quite excited. Have a listen below.

Song of the Day: April 4, 2019 - "I'll Wait" by The Strumbellas

April 04, 2019 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

The Strumbellas had a pretty great week.

First, their new album Rattlesnake was released, and the single we’re featuring today, “I’ll Wait” was used by the Blue Jays for their opening day montage, and just last night, they were on Late Night with Seth Myers performing “Salvation”!

Not too shabby Strumbellas. Excited to see what’s next, and if there’s a Vancouver tour date in the near future.

Song of the Day: April 3, 2019 - "Ya Ya Ya Ya" by Jon Bryant

April 03, 2019 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

When part of your press release starts with “In 2015, Jon Bryant joined a cult…” you get quite intrigued, or at least, I do.

While the lens he wrote the album (Cult Classic) from has to do with how he saw the world after leaving the cult, the single “Ya Ya Ya Ya” is specifically about relationships, and communication breakdown.

It’s got a heavy Childish Gambino “Redbone” vibe at the beginning for me, and is quite catchy.

You can see Jon at the Biltmore Cabaret on May 5th!

Song of the Day: April 2, 2019 - "Half Past Nine" by Close Talker

April 02, 2019 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

I’m just going to say it, these guys are crazy fools, and I got cold just watching the video!

Close Talker decided to film a video for their single “Half Past Nine” on Vancouver Island, mid-winter, and I’m shocked they didn’t lose a few toes in the process!

It’s the first new single since 2017, and I couldn’t find anything else about an album…yet. Will have to keep an eye out, I’m sure we’ll here more soon after they’ve warmed up.

Song of the Day: April 1, 2019 - "Half-Saved" by Luca Fogale

April 01, 2019 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

I couldn’t think of a good song to choose for April Fools, so instead you’re going to get a beautiful track by one of my favourite voices (AND a gorgeous video to boot).

Luca Fogale just released a new single “Half-Saved” from his upcoming record, which you can hear below, and will be in town this week on the 3rd and 4th supporting Dermot Kennedy at the Commodore Ballroom.

He’s also scheduled to perform at the Constellation Festival in July in Squamish, so you can listen to the new track and pretending you’re in the summer sunshine listening beneath the Chief.
