Song of the Day: March 17, 2019 - "Hideout" by The Dark Fruits

“Hideout” is the second single off Authors of Affection, the debut album from Yukon’s The Dark Fruits. The video shows 4 kids devouring a hamburger, and lead vocalist Jeff Wolosewich says:

"It’s an homage to an old Andy Warhol performance art piece, filmed by Danish filmmaker Jorgen Leth. I was just trying to think of a really simple idea for the video yet I also wanted it convey that feeling of a secret place or a special moment in time. I remembered this idea from Leth where Warhol just sits and eats a burger, but it’s so much more than that. There are so many micromovements he makes… it becomes almost like a beautiful ballet. I thought I’d enlist my kids to try it - all with just one take each - and I was going to pick the best one. In the end, cutting them all together made it work. I love how it captures these four fleeting moments in time, from young to older and older to young. The bonus was that my kids all ate the burgers entirely, and it only took them 4 and a ½ minutes each. If you’re a parent, you know how special that is.”

Song of the Day: March 16, 2019 - "Tell Me I Exist" by Lydia Ainsworth

Phantom Forest comes out May 10, but we’re getting another tease at the new album from Lydia Ainsworth with the latest single, “Tell Me I Exist”.

The existential song has an ethereal vibe, and Ainsworth says in an interview: "I find many facets of social media to be meaningful and I feel more connected than ever with kindred spirits who I'd probably not been able to connect with had the technology not been there. But I am afraid of the way it is being harnessed by dictatorial powers. Our faces all stored in a tidy database. Technology has become a distraction to the truth."

She also announced a batch of tour dates, but looks to be skirting Vancouver, so hopefully will be back here sooner than later!

Song of the Day: March 14, 2019 - "Blue Moon (Nude)" by Ashleigh Ball ft. with Gracenote Choir

Ashleigh Ball released this stripped down version, live off-the-floor, of her song “Blue Moon” last week.

The song features the all-female Gracenote Choir in a one-shot video at the Settlement Building in Vancouver, and it’s as gorgeous as it sounds.

The album from which it came, Gold In You, is being released again with a “Nude” version of each song, on April 24th!

Vancouver’s own Tourist Company have released a new video for their single “Conflicted/Restricted” which will be from their new album set to come out later this year (that’s all the deets we have!).

In the mean time, put this one on full screen, because it deserves it!

Song of the Day: March 12, 2019 - "Running Scared (Desert Song)" by The Strumbellas

While we wait for their new album Rattlesnake (out March 29), The Strumbellas are giving us another tease by way of a new song!

“Running Scared (Desert Song)” is “actually the song that inspired the artwork for the album. We love playing it because it makes us feel like we’re in the middle of the desert,” says singer Simon Ward. “This is one of the songs that came together the fastest and the studio was fun because we got to experiment with lots of weird instruments”.

Song of the Day: March 11, 2019 - "Future Shade" by Black Mountain

Black Mountain has announced a new album and if they don’t take Destroyer on the road with them when they tour it, I’ll be sad, because it is indeed titled Destroyer.

The first single from the EP is “Future Shade” and if you needed to wake up this morning, this is the jam for you.

The album isn’t out until May 24th, so I’m sure we’ll get more music along the way!

Today’s tune, “Free At Last” comes with an instructional video on how to play along, as well as clips of people from all different genres, and ages, performing their interpretation.
