Song of the Day: June 30, 2018 - "Dirt" by Ellevator

June 30, 2018 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

I'm looking forward to the day I can catch Ellevator live... They just performed at the Rally with the Arkells and then with Rich Aucoin in New York.

The band has released a new single, "Dirt", that didn't make the cut from their newly released self-titled debut album. The band decided to release it as a stand-alone instead letting it collect dust/go un-heard.

Take a listen below!

June 29, 2018 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

PoCo's indie pop-rock band Royal Oak have released a new single called "Tell Me" from their upcoming record Pretend. (I'm looking forward to hearing the song "Mistakes" as according to the track list it features a 3AM fav: Chersea!)

The band is heading out on tour this summer, starting with a hometown record release party at the Biltmore on July 27th - info here.

Song of the Day: June 27, 2018 - "Danny Don't You Know" by Ninja Sex Party

June 27, 2018 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

This is two days in a row where the Song of the Day has hit real close to home for me.

"Danny Don't You Know" is the newest song from comedy duo Ninja Sex Party, an 80s-tinged power ballad which features lead singer Danny Sexbang giving a pep talk to his nerdy, awkward younger self (played in the video by Stranger Things'es' Finn Wolfhard).

Danny Sexbang and his partner Ninja Brian (both of which you may also know from the Game Grumps YouTube channel) will be releasing their sixth album, Cool Patrol, on August 17. The album features plenty special guests, including Toronto's TWRP, who will feature as the duo's backing band on tour (no Vancouver date yet, but here's hoping).

Song of the Day: June 26, 2018 - "Time Flies" by Dom Fricot

June 26, 2018 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

If you've noticed an influx in new music from Dom Fricot this year, it's because he's been releasing his newest album Deserts bit by bit, and the third and final part just came out this past weekend.

Part 3 includes the latest single “Time Flies”, which Dom says "is sung from the perspective of someone in their mid 30s who thought they would have achieved more in their life by now."

Check out the single below, and all three parts of Deserts in all the usual places.

Song of the Day: June 25, 2018 - "Alone But Not Alone" by Great Lake Swimmers

June 25, 2018 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

If you need to ease into your Monday morning, this new track ("Alone But Not Alone") by Great Lake Swimmers can do just that for you.

The new album from the band will be out on August 17th and will be titled The Waves, The Wake, which sounds appropriate for an artist with a water-related band name!

Lead singer Tony Dekker says this of the track: "This song is a reflection on that sense of suffocating connectedness while still feeling disconnected at the same time. In the end it’s a pretty lonely place, but there’s a resolve to keep an open heart and mind."

Check it out, and the video below - and you can see the band on tour in Vancouver at the Imperial on September 21st!

Song of the Day: June 22, 2018 - "Just Here With My Friends" by The Darcys

June 22, 2018 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Your 2018 Summer Jam is here, and it's courtesy of The Darcys, with a little help from Leah Fay (of a little band you may have heard of called July Talk).

The aptly named "Just Here With My Friends" is a bit of a subversion, about two people meeting the the club and not hooking up, and continues the energetic, dancey vibes from their last album, Centerfold.

Check out the karaoke styled lyric video below!

Song of the Day: June 16, 2018 - "Troubled Mind" by Dan Mangan

June 16, 2018 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

If you've been following Dan Mangan on the social media lately, you probably noticed a lot of pictures with the flame emoji pasted over peoples heads, and the words "Troubled Mind".

That would, of course, be the lead up to his brand new single, an incendiary and dancey new track that is absolutely going to be lodged into your mind after the first listen. For both its catchiness, and its lyrical timeliness.

Dan says: "Troubled Mind is about the struggle to maintain any kind of mental equilibrium in the day-to-day as we are bombarded with fake news, sensationalized swipe-culture and increased access to the woes of the world. As the inflation of urgency increases, so does our capacity and appetite for it. It might also be my most dance-able song, and I wanted to indulge that whim with the lyric video. I thought it would be funny to see people whose body language was in complete contrast to the lyrics - both in denial of the troubled mind, as well as in defiance against it."

And if you want to send him flame-headed pictures as well, he's all for it: "Some folks have been DM'ing or posting their own photos and videos with their heads on fire, or maybe their dog's head on fire, or their cat, or a picture of Oprah. I think it is VERY VERY FUNNY. So please feel free to keep doing that."

Song of the Day: June 15, 2018 - "I Lit The Fire" by Jack Garton

June 15, 2018 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Longtime fans of the East Van music scene might remember Jack Garton from Maria in the Shower, but now he's back with his second solo album, Love You Over Time, out June 29th.

"I Lit The Fire" is the raucous first single, and Jack says it's "heavily influenced by the rock 'n' roll that I grew up listening to," says Jack. " I love that dog-eared roll-call kind of delivery in Chuck Berry's songs, it's a form of classic American poetry. 'Johnny B Goode' starts out with that great image of the hut way up in the hills. I thought "what if someone came across that old hut, got a fire started and made it cosy again?""

Check out the video below, filmed at WISE Hall, which is also where his album release show will be, on June 30th!
