Song(s) of the Day - May 03, 2018 - "Collarbones” and “Burdock & Dandelion” by BRAIDS

May 03, 2018 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Just a couple days ago I was thinking about BRAIDS and if we were going to hear any new music from them soon. Well, here we are with not one but two brand new singles that I can only conclude I willed into existence. You're welcome.

Joking aside, "Collarbones” and “Burdock & Dandelion” are a pair of powerful songs about modern dating, looks, and cell phones.
Singer Raphaelle Standell-Preston says: “For those of u that have ever taken selfies, contorted ur body for selfies, pushed up ur breasts, hid ur breasts, hid ur ass, pushed up ur ass, exaggerated ur bulge, exaggerated ur collarbones, turned up the contrast, softened ur lines, been ghosted, ghosted, used tinder, failed at tinder, fallen down an instagram hole, deleted and downloaded it , deleted and downloaded it, deleted and downloaded it, wandered the drug store for clarity, thought hair dye could ease ur pain, at least for a couple days, and flipped the bird at 1 or all of these things - these songs are 4 u.

We hope you can sing with them, scream with them, dance with them, laugh with them and dream of how u want to feel and deserve to feel. Take a moment for urself.”

Check out the playlist of both songs below!

Song of the Day: April 30, 2018 - "Gatekeeper" by Cancer Bats

April 30, 2018 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Last week Ontario's Cancer Bats released a new album, The Spark That Moves, with zero warning, much to fan's delight!

The band is getting ready to head out on a tour celebrating the 10th Anniversary of their sophomore album, Hail Destroyer, in May, and the surprise album was a great bonus.

There are videos for each of the 11 tracks spread between this YouTube account and this YouTube account. You can check out the one for the lead track off of the new album "Gatekeeper" below!

Song of the Day: April 29, 2018 - "Rocket" by JP Maurice

April 29, 2018 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Back in January, JP Maurice launched his EP, Girls, with a show at the Rickshaw to kick off 2018. Flash forward a few months and the full length album, Boys, is ready to go and will be out May 18th.

Conveniently, JP will have another release show at the Rickshaw on the same day as the release, with bands Hotel Mira (great for me, as I just missed their own debut!), Frankiie, and Bad Animal - click here for the Facebook event page!

The first single "Rocket" from the album is out now and you can listen below!

Song of the Day: April 28, 2018 - "Show Me How to Love" by Bend Sinister

April 28, 2018 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

After only one listen, I can already envision a packed venue dancing, jumping, and shouting along to the new Bend Sinister tune, "Show Me How To Love".

The fun and raucous song features Danny Vacon from The Dudes, and is another tease from their upcoming album Foolish Games due out in May

Song of the Day: April 27, 2018 - "Better When You're Close" by Youngblood

April 27, 2018 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

One of my favourite new bands out of Vancouver in the last few years is Youngblood, and I've been eagerly waiting for more new music from them, since their '016 EP Feel Alright.

Luckily the wait is over with "Better When Your Close", a sexy song with a creepy video (I feel like 'sexy with a hint of sinister' is very "on-brand" for the band). The song is the first single from the upcoming EP Fantasy Love, due out in July,  and is "about romantic obsession to the point of possession- where you feel like your entire body and mind have been involuntarily taken over by the mere proximity of another person and you've lost your sense of self," according to singer Alexis Young. "It's about coming to terms with the realities of putting love and lust on a pedestal, and just how quickly a person can become consumed by infatuation of the highest degree. Crippling, consuming, and it also has a sweet bass line that you can dance to, because why not.”

Song of the Day: April 21, 2018 - "Love the Way You Are" by Yukon Blonde

April 21, 2018 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

In the last year or so we've heard two new songs from Yukon Blonde ("Crazy" and "Emotional Blackmail") but with another brand new song we also learn a little more about the new album.

"Love The Way You Are" is a gritty anthem that will be on their upcoming album Critical Hit -- out June 22 on Dine Alone Records -- and I guarantee you the chorus will be stuck in your head from the moment you hit play, until the day the album is out.

Song of the Day: April 20, 2018 - "Mr. Plague" by METZ

April 20, 2018 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

METZ's album Strange Peace came out in September of last year, but we're still getting a lot out of it!

A new video for the song "Mr. Plague" was just released and you can view it below. The band has a busy year...they're currently in Europe touring, then China, and Japan, and back to the States and Canada for summer festival season, including the Westward Music Festival in Vancouver.
