Song of the Day: September 25, 2017 - "Hold On" by Leisure Club

September 25, 2017 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Guys, I'm freezing cold...how is it 40 degrees in Ontario and I have a scarf and a jacket on at my desk?

"Hold On" by Vancouver's Leisure Club landed in my inbox a few minutes ago, and I closed my eyes and tried to pretend I was floating in that raft pictured above, in the sunshine...and possibly, for a brief moment, I was there.

The band's (self-titled) debut record comes out on November 17th - keep an eye out! - and they perform on October 6th at the Waldorf.

Song of the Day: September 15, 2017 - "Mansplainin'" by Nice Horse

September 15, 2017 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

I really feel like I shouldn't be the one to clarify what this song is about...

Anyway, one week ago, the four ladies of Nice Horse released their debut full length called There Goes the Neighbourhood, which includes this tune, "Mansplainin'" (it's not a single, just one of the highlights of the album).

After giving that album a listen, what I do feel confident in saying is that Nice Horse is to country music as Eagles of Death Metal are to rock. In the sense that, you can tell they really love the genre, but at the same time are not over-serious about it. They've placed their saddle right on that line between sincerity and satire, and doing a great job of it.

Song of the Day: September 14, 2017 - "Hungry Teeth" by The Wild Romantics

September 14, 2017 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

I've said it before, and no doubt I'll say it again: dead centre on the spectrum between July Talk and Whitehorse lies The Wild Romantics.

"Hungry Teeth" is their newest single and, as you might expect, features the voices of Aleisha Kalina & Evan Miller dancing together with a laid back vibe.

No word yet on a new album, but hopefully this is the precursor to one out soon.

Song of the Day: September 13, 2017 - "Figure It Out" by The Matinée

September 13, 2017 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

If The Matinée ever decides to give up on this music thing, they might just have another career lined up, if the new video for "Figured It Out" is anything to go on. Well, half of them anyway, as it features the band as patrons and proprietors of a diner, along with guest vocalist (and Light Organ label-mate) Emily Rowed.

My only problem with the video? Surely Chef Geoff Petrie should be wearing some sort of hair- and/or beard-net?!?

Song of the Day: September 12, 2017 - "The Day Passed and the Sun Went Down" by Jasper Sloan Yip

September 12, 2017 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

It's been a while since we heard anything new from Vancouver's Jasper Sloan Yip, but it was worth the wait.

"The Day Passed and the Sun Went Down" is a gorgeous song, with an equally gorgeous video to go along with it, that follows Jasper down to Oregon to view the recent total solar eclipse.

Jasper says that one the new album Post Meridiem, “Each song on the album follows the passage of the sun. The first six songs are a narrative strung together, flowing into each other like night and day.” I can't wait to hear it on October 27.
