Song of the Day: January 09, 2017 - "Shapeshifter" by JP Maurice

January 09, 2017 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

New music from JP Maurice! "Shapeshifter" is the first single off his new EP called Girls (though you might have heard a few of the other songs from his time in the Peak Performance Project).

There will be a full length album later this year titled Boys, but in the meantime catch the live show/EP release this Saturday at the Biltmore Cabaret (Jan 14), and the new song below!

Song of the Day: January 08, 2017 - "I Never Asked" by Hello Delaware

January 08, 2017 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

While "I Never Asked" isn't quite a new song, last year's Hello Delaware album My Mistake only recently made its way to my earholes.

If you (like me) miss Rilo Kiley or are looking for a Jenny Lewis vibe, I would definitely suggest putting the Daniel Ledwell-produced album in your earholes, too.

Song of the Day: January 07, 2017 - "Born Yesterday" by Hollerado

January 07, 2017 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

So much new music coming out this month! Today we've got another one from Hollerado, who have their 4th album on the way in the next few months.

The new single is called "Born Yesterday" and sounds a bit closer to vintage Hollerado with the catchy sing-a-long chorus (and the ooo-OOO-ooo-OOO's), and is very guitar-driven.

The band will be in Vancouver on Feb 7th with Sam Roberts at the Orpheum, which I cannot wait for - it's going to be a great show.

Song of the Day: January 06, 2017 - "Decadent Days" by Gay Nineties

January 06, 2017 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Saxamaphonnnnne! That's pretty much how the new song, "Decadent Days", by the Gay Nineties starts off. The new single was released today ahead of the full album (Big Love) release on January 27th.

The song has shades of Bowie, and a sing-a-long chorus, with driving bass and drums, and of course, a saxophone solo mid-song. If it's any indication of the rest of the album, my excitement for the new music is growing

Song of the Day: January 05, 2017 - "Step Into The Darkness" by Said the Whale

January 05, 2017 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Forget everything you knew about Said the Whale. The Vancouver band is back, but may look a little different than you remember them. Slimmed down to a three piece -- Tyler, Ben, and Jaycelyn -- they're gearing up for the release of their new album As Long As Your Eyes Are Wide with the new single "Step Into The Darkness", a synth-driven song that builds to a soaring chorus.

The album is out March 31st, and I'll be interested to hear the rest of it. What do you think?

Song of the Day: January 4, 2017 - "RAPIDS" by The Acorn

January 04, 2017 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

The Acorn's album Vieux Loup came out in 2015, and we have a music video for "RAPIDS" now. I still continue to start many mornings off with this album, so i thought this would be a good reminder for you all.

Now, if only we could get a tour out west...pretty please!

Song of the Day: December 26, 2016 - "Sierra Nevada" by Windmills

December 26, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

I have a feeling that you might need something to put you at peace today. To make you tranquil. That's where this new song from Windmills comes in.

The looper from Kelowna just released a brand new song called "Sierra Nevada", and it is the perfect song to just sit back, close your eyes, let it wash over you and drift high, above the Sierra Nevada mountains.

It'll be out early next year on a 7", and hopefully is a tease of a new full length album soon.

Song of the Day: December 23, 2016 - "All I Want For Christmas Is You" by The Darcys

December 23, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

There aren't many original Christmas songs that are written that stick around like the traditional ones do, but Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas Is You" is definitely one of them, and honestly, it's a favourite of mine.

So combine this with one of my favourite acts of 2016, The Darcys, doing a cover very true to them, and I'm a happy caroller. Turn this one up, and sing along!
