Song of the Day: November 30, 2016 - "Solidarity" by Bill & Joel Plaskett

November 30, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

A few years ago, Joel Plaskett brought his father Bill on tour with him, and now the two have joined forces again for a brand new album.

Solidarity is out February 17 on Pheromone Recordings, and you can get your first listen to the title track below. The song mixes Bill's traditional folk sensibilities with Joel's acclaimed rock & roll.

Joel says:  “I wanted a song Dad and I could sing together that connected our individual journeys and our personal politics. The word ‘solidarity’ came to mind and didn't leave.”

Song of the Day: November 29, 2016 - "29 Palms" by Tasseomancy

November 29, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Today's Song Of The Day, "29 Palms", comes from the sister duo Tasseomancy (former members of Austra).

"29 Palms" is a futuristic dream-pop type song (with a sexy saxophone backing track!) from their latest album Do Easy, and here is the band's take on it's meaning:
"To us, this song encapsulates so much: written for women; for artists and for any human who has ever felt themselves falling into nothingness while grasping at their own poetic string. Whether it be a loss of self, loss of another or an attempt to create meaning in what has so been recently confirmed to be an unjust and crazy-cruel world."

The video was created created by visual artist Jesi Jordan during the band's travels. Check it out below.

Song of the Day: November 28, 2016 - "Who's The Madman" by Louise Burns

November 28, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Always excited when songs I've only heard live are finally released, and that's exactly the case here with Louise Burns' new single "Who's The Madman".

I recognized it immediately from her last few performances as she was able to capture the same magic that she produces on stage, making me sway (now in my seat).

Louise's new album Young Mopes will be out on February 3, 2017, and hopefully we'll get a few more teasers between now and then!

Song of the Day: November 26, 2016 - "Evelyn" by Hannah Georgas

November 26, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

New music video from Hannah Georgas for her song "Evelyn".

Make sure you've had your morning coffee before you watch this one because it's wonderfully glitchy. Don't you wish there were actually this many copies of this wonderful artist? I'll just take one for Vancouver, thank you very much!

Song of the Day: November 25, 2016 - "Suburbia" by Matthew Good

November 25, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

One of my all time absolute favourite albums is Beautiful Midnight. So imagine my delight when Matthew Good announced not only a new EP called I Miss New Wave where he would be revisiting five songs from the album... but also a tour where the album would be played, in its entirety, front to back.

The tour begins next year, and includes three shows at the Commodore, February 16-18. While you wait for that, check out the rejiggered version of "Suburbia" below, on Spotify.

Song of the Day: November 24, 2016 - "Spacesuit" by Matt and Sam's Brother

November 24, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Charlie Kerr of JPNSGRLS has launched his solo work under the name Matt and Sam's Brother, and has come out with a single called "Spacesuit".

The voice is undeniably recognizable but the tone is significantly different. Some of the songs on the album (no date yet, just '2017') apparently were written when Charlie was just 16. I'm excited to hear more, but for now check out "Spacesuit" below:

Song of the Day: November 23, 2016 - "White Lights" by The Rural Alberta Advantage

November 23, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

It's been a while, but here's some brand new music from The Rural Alberta Advantage for your ears!

They quietly dropped a video for "White Lights" last week, taking footage from the trio's live shows. No word on an album to go with it yet, but if this song is any indication, it's gonna be a fiery one.
