Song of the Day: November 08, 2016 - "For The People" by Monster Truck

November 08, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

How very appropriate for today that we give you the new single/video from Monster Truck that is politically focused, right as America is heading to the polls.

Hopefully they get the message from it we don't have He Who Must Not Be Named in charge down south. Have a listen to "For The People" and get back to your TV sets.

Song of the Day: November 07, 2016 - "Queens" by Her

November 07, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

It's my birthday and I'll choose the Song Of The Day if I want to!

A week from today I'll be in Seattle to finally see Her again live. It's been almost a year since I caught them at the Trans Musicales festival in France for the first time, so I'm stoked to be able to hear them and the new music.

If you have the desire too, head to The Crocodile on November 14th in Seattle or if you're sticking to Vancouver (hopefully they'll come visit here soon) take a listen to the new song "Queens" below.

(PS Come to Karaoke at the Cobalt for my birthday tonight and sing me a song!)

Song of the Day: November 05, 2016 - "The Drugs" by Mother Mother

November 05, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

New Mother Mother!

It's been quite a while since we've got some new music from the band (I heard some of it at NXNE in Toronto over the summer). The new single (and video, below) "The Drugs" reminds be over older songs from the band like "My Baby Don't Dance".

Word is, the new album will be out in early 2017, so keep an ear out!

Song of the Day: November 04, 2016 - "Hawk" by Brasstronaut

November 04, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

We're just one week away from the release of the brand new self-titled Brasstronaut album.
(And three weeks away from their show at Fortune)

Over the last four years, members of the Vancouver band have dispersed to separate corners of the continent and worked on their own solo projects, but they kept in touch, building on musical ideas to make up the new album.

"Hawk" is the second single, the song starting with soothing vocals before exploding into... is "interstellar jazz" a genre? If not, it is now.

Check it out below!

Song of the Day: October 31, 2016 - "Do They Know It's Hallowe'en" by The North American Hallowe'en Prevention Initiative

October 31, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Okay, I know I posted this as last Hallowe'en's SOTD, but it really is my favourite spooky song, and I wanted to start a tradition. "Do They Know It's Hallowe'en?" is by an all star lineup calling themselves North American Halloween Prevention Initiative, released as a charity single that pokes more than a little fun at "Do They Know It's Christmas?".

All proceeds of the song were donated to UNICEF, and the song "stems from a frustration with other benefit songs' misguided, somewhat patronizing attitude, and Western-centric worldview."

So just how "all star" was the lineup? Well, let's have a little rundown, shall we?

Liane Balaban of Dessert
Devendra Banhart

Song of the Day: October 30, 2016 - "Close My Eyes" by Walrus

October 30, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

We've got a timely video for you today from the band Walrus, for their song "Close My Eyes" off the Goodbye Something EP.

The video features a pumpkin-headed person picking out pumpkins in a patch, and running into what appears to be a candy/pumpkin eating monster?

Go ahead and give yourselves some nightmares right before Halloween!

Song of the Day: October 28, 2016 - "The Castle" by The Flaming Lips

October 28, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Those fearless freaks The Flaming Lips are back! And their new single "The Castle" is a lot less... um... 'acid trippy' than some of their stuff from the last few years. Instead it harkens back to the more lilting, soaring psyche-pop of Yoshimi-era FLips.

The song is the first single from the upcoming album, Oczy Mlody, which is loosly translated from Polish to mean Eyes of the Young, which will be available January 13th.
