Song of the Day: September 26, 2016 - "What They Mean" by Donovan Woods

September 26, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Donovan Woods just recently released a new EP titled They Are Going Away, and with it a new lyric video for the single "What They Mean".

The song is about "why they say the word crazy in country songs so often" and goes through a narrative of explaining it to a child. It's really pretty sweet in the end, so make sure to give it a listen below!

Donovan is heading out on tour this fall and has a stop in Vancouver on the 11th of November at the Fox Cabaret with Joey Landreth.

Song of the Day: September 23, 2016 - "Beck + Call" by July Talk ft. Tanya Tagaq

September 23, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Another new song (and video) from July Talk, this single featuring Tanya Tagaq and a driving drum beat that reminded me almost instantly of "Beautiful People" by Marilyn Mason (in a good way, I'd pay to hear July Talk cover that song).

They band's new album Touch is out now, and they are about to embark on a long tour starting in Germany, and then heading through the states and Canada. TWO shows are scheduled for Vancouver after the first sold out - so get your tickets for the November 23rd show with The Zolas.

Song of the Day: September 21, 2016 - "Her" by Her

September 21, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Last year when I was invited to the Trans Musicales Festival in Rennes, France, I went through the massive artist list to try and get to know some of the bands I was going to see a bit better.

Her was a major standout for me and they didn't disappoint in their live show either, and I've been trying to keep up on their progress as a band ever since.

They just released a new music video for their self-titled song "Her", and a few tour dates including some West Coast shows in the States (including Portland and Seattle) to which I might just have to make the journey to go see. Check out the song/video below.

In a little under a month, The Balconies will be releasing their brand new album Rhonda. The album "tells the story of its fictional heroine title character, and her struggle for self-discovery and authenticity in a saturated world."

You can get a taste with the recently released lyric video for the title track below, and then pick up the album on October 14th.

Song of the Day: September 16, 2016 - "I'm Glad" by Lanikai

September 16, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

While Winnipeg band Imaginary Cities is "on hiatus for the foreseeable future", lead singer Marti Sarbit has started working on her own project, Lanikai.

The first single from the upcoming album is "I'm Glad", the singer's powerful voice soaring over soulful indie-pop.

The self-titled album is out November 18th on Hidden Pony Records.

Song of the Day: September 14, 2016 - "Wild" by ROYAL

September 14, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

The first time I saw Jodi Pederson was when she was a part of the Peak Performance Project a couple years ago. I thought she had a great voice and loads of potential, but didn't really hear anything from her after that. Until a few days ago.

Now going under the name ROYAL, she's teamed with producer Ryan Worsley (who has worked with Dear Rouge) to release a brand new song, "Wild", a soulful indie-pop gem.

You can also catch ROYAL at Studio Records on October 2nd to celebrate the single's release, playing alongside Jon Bryant, Alexandria Maillot, and SAVVIE (what a lineup!)
