Song of the Day: September 16, 2016 - "I'm Glad" by Lanikai

September 16, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

While Winnipeg band Imaginary Cities is "on hiatus for the foreseeable future", lead singer Marti Sarbit has started working on her own project, Lanikai.

The first single from the upcoming album is "I'm Glad", the singer's powerful voice soaring over soulful indie-pop.

The self-titled album is out November 18th on Hidden Pony Records.

Song of the Day: September 14, 2016 - "Wild" by ROYAL

September 14, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

The first time I saw Jodi Pederson was when she was a part of the Peak Performance Project a couple years ago. I thought she had a great voice and loads of potential, but didn't really hear anything from her after that. Until a few days ago.

Now going under the name ROYAL, she's teamed with producer Ryan Worsley (who has worked with Dear Rouge) to release a brand new song, "Wild", a soulful indie-pop gem.

You can also catch ROYAL at Studio Records on October 2nd to celebrate the single's release, playing alongside Jon Bryant, Alexandria Maillot, and SAVVIE (what a lineup!)

September 13, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

The hiatus is finally over, 12 years later for Winnipeg (and former Mint Record) band Duotang.

I managed to catch them at the Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto during NXNE, and we finally have some new music and tour dates!

The new song is called "Karma Needs To Come Around", the album New Occupation will be out on October 14th via Stomp Records, and they'll be playing in Vancouver on November 3rd at the Biltmore. Check out the new song below!

Song of the Day: September 12, 2016 - "Can You At Least Wait 'Til I've Had My Coffee?" by Lisa LeBlanc

September 12, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

I know it's strange, but I have always secretly (well, not so secretly now) wanted to date a musician and then have a breakup song written about me. I know it's weird, but admit it, you do too.

But I might have to rethink that after the new Lisa LeBlanc single "Can You At Least Wait 'Til I've Had My Coffee?" LeBlanc says: "don't be a dick to somebody who writes tunes or this will happen" and that's really all the introduction this song needs.

It's off her album Why You Wanna Leave, Runaway Queen? which is out September 30th on Bonsound.

Song of the Day: September 11, 2016 - "Andromeda" by Elephant Stone

September 11, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Elephant Stone's new album Ship Of Fools will be out next week (September 16), and they've just released the video for their single "Andromeda"; a song inspired by images of the galaxy by the same name.

The band will be on tour after the album's release, both through the states and in Canada, with a stop in Vancouver at the Cobalt on November 8th.

Song of the Day: September 10, 2016 - "Coming Up For Air" by Darcys

September 10, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

More new tunes from the Darcys! I'm getting pretty excited for the new album (Centerfold) to finally come out, but that's not until November 4th, so I'll take all the new singles I can get!

"Coming Up For Air" brings the energy back up to the level of "Miracle" and is another very danceable track. I'm stoked to do just that when the Darcys perform at the Rifflandia Music Festival next weekend.

Check out the song below!

Song of the Day: September 08, 2016 - "Centre" by Tanya Tagaq ft Shad

September 08, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Finally have some new Tanya Tagaq on our hands, and the first single "Centre" from the upcoming album Retribution (Oct 21) features Shad.

Not only does the song have Shad rapping over Tagaq's distict throat singing, she also sings lyrics in the background of the song.

Check out the single below and keep an eye out for the new album, and hopefully more material before it's release!
