Song of the Day: August 07, 2016 - "Sometimes" by IsKwé

August 07, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Last year I was enamoured by the song "Nobody Knows" by as artist I wasn't familiar with, Iskwé. Now she's released a brand new song, "Sometimes", which according to her:

“This song came after a pretty tough breakup. I had been trying my best to make things work, but sometimes you get to a point where you need to call a spade a spade and let go. Besides, every album needs a good breakup song, right?”

The song has her powerful voice soaring over the piano and frantic beats with the same barely-contained chaos of a tumultuous relationship.

Iskwé will also be on tour this fall, but the closest she's coming to Vancouver will be Powell River at the Sunshine Music Festival. But hopefully, she'll have time to stop for a show here, too.

Super group TUNS has released their second single titled "Throw It All Away" from their upcoming debut, self-titled album.

The new record is due out on August 26th, but no word on any cross-Canada tour yet, but they did just play Sappy Fest, and I managed to catch them at NXNE, so we'll have to wait and see.

Check out the new single below, and you can pre-order the new album by clicking HERE.

Song of the Day: August 04, 2016 - "Blow The Bass" by Lowell

August 04, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Lowell has released the second song for her upcoming EP, Part 1: Paris YK, out on August 26 via Arts & Crafts.

The new song is titled "Blow The Bass" and is one of 3 songs (the last one being called "West Coast Forever"!) on the new record. The new record is a reflection on her time spent living in the Yukon Territory, and the latest track is a synth-y, danceable track. Have a listen below:

Song of the Day: August 03, 2016 - "Born To Rule" by Paper Lions

August 03, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Here's another sneak peek at Paper Lions upcoming album, Full Colour.

The album is out September 16, and "Born To Rule" starts off as a piano ballad before erupting into a dancey tune with maybe a hint of the 80s?

They've also announced a host of tour dates, starting with what they're calling a "Super Show" in their hometown of Charlottetown, PEI at the end of September, and a show right here at the Biltmore on November 26th.

Song of the Day: August 02, 2016 - "If I'm Enough" by Mathew V

August 02, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

I met this talented young man through Vancouver's Willa, and have been patiently waiting for some new music from him ever since, and that day has arrived!

Mathew V's new single "If I'm Enough" is out now; a song full of soul, with pop hooks and killer vocals.

From what I read, there is a video for the single to follow, and we can expect the full record (called Sounds) out in the fall. Take a listen below!

Song of the Day: August 01, 2016 - "B.C. Orienteering" by Said the Whale

August 01, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

I can't think of a more BC band to celebrate BC Day than Said the Whale.

"B.C. Orienteering" comes off their album Islands Disappear, and is a cautionary tale of camping in BC (and also, with a Broken Compass). The video below is a live session with a bonus guest, Hannah Georgas!

So have a happy BC Day, hopefully you are not travelling alone. And won't meet a bear.

Song of the Day: July 31, 2016 - "Drake's Dad" by Arkells

July 31, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

If you're going to write a song called "Drake's Dad", you damn well better get Drake's dad for the music video.

Luckily, that is exactly what Arkells did for their southern gospel influenced jam off Morning Report, which is out next week.

The song is inspired by a true story, which Max Kerman elaborates:

"Last summer I was on a road trip with my best friends through the American south, and in the magic of the night, we happened to meet Drake’s dad - Dennis Graham - in a Memphis bar. He couldn’t have been more gracious, especially given that there were 16 of us, drunk on friendship and cheap American beer. This chance encounter inspired this song.
The narrative carries on to Nashville for some more shenanigans, and finishes with us all crawling back into bed back home in Hamilton, very tired and missing our girls."
