Song of the Day: May 22, 2016 - "Them Call Themselves Old Punks" by Moonface and Siinai

May 22, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

It's the second single from the upcoming Moonface and Siinai collaboration! "Them Call Themselves Old Punks" starts off reminding me of some of the more creepy Sunset Rubdown songs, before building as Krug's voice soars over Siinai's riffs.

My Best Human Face comes out June 3rd on Jagjaguwar, and is possibly my most anticipated upcoming album. .

Song of the Day: May 21, 2016 - "Infinity" by BESTiE

May 21, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Seeing as the May long weekend is the unofficial start of summer, what better song of the day than the latest from Vancouver's summeriest band, BESTiE?

"Infinity" is the third (and final) song released off their Permanent Vacation EP, which dropped yesterday. Produced by Dr. Boss himself Shawn Cole, it's a tropical pop-rock song that is should be on heavy rotation on everyone's summer playlists.

Song of the Day: May 19, 2016 - "Soldier" by David Beckingham

May 19, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

David Beckingham (one third of Hey Ocean!) is gearing up for the release of his first solo album, and he's giving us another taste of that it will sound like.

In a new video for "Soldier", Beckingham & his backing band perform live-off-the-floor in the Alsco Linen building, as his voice trembles over the swell of strings.

"Just When The Light" is out May 27th, and he'll be playing around Vancouver in July -- at Khatsahlano and Hiatus festivals, and in Victoria in August.

Song of the Day: May 17, 2016 - "A Blur and A Haze" by SAVVIE

May 17, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

The bad news is, SAVVIE didn't make it to the final four on CBC Searchlight, after being one of the top two Vancouver artists.

The good news is, there's a brand new video for "A Blur and A Haze"!

SAVVIE teamed with production studio Faked Potatoes on the video fitting this dark and brooding song.

Song of the Day: May 16, 2016 - "Avalanche" by Kalle Mattson

May 16, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Last night we found out the winner of the 2016 Prism Prize: Kalle Mattson's video for Avalanche, directed by Philip Sportel.

As you'll see in the video below, the camera follows Kalle as he moves around a room and recreates some of his favourite album covers - reminiscent of Rich Aucoin's video for Brian Wilson Is A.L.i.V.E. that took home the prize in 2014!

Check it out below, and click here to see the winner of the Audience Award, "Virgins" by Death From Above 1979.

Song of the Day: May 15, 2016 - "Something Special" by Fake Shark

May 15, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

We've got "Something Special" for you today...literally.

Fake Shark recently released their new single ahead of their upcoming tour (starts on Monday in Toronto) - check out the dates/locations here.

It seems like since dropping the Real Zombie from their name, their sound has evolved as well. "Something Special" is definitely more accessible than their early work, in a danceable indie pop kinda way. And I want to venture a guess that Steve Bays was involved in this one in some way, as it totally has the Hot Hot Heat/Mounties vibe to it.

The new album is still in progress, but hopefully we'll get more like this soon!

Song(s) of the Day: May 14, 2016 - "On Paper" and "A Little Rain (A Song for Pete)" by Arkells

May 14, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Way to ruin everything, Arkells. I had planned to put "On Paper" as today's SOTD, because: "May 14 I got a letter written from you, it's sitting on the dresser."

And then you had to go and release a humdinger of a song. Just a week after "Private School" -- the first single off the new album Morning Report -- comes the Motown-soaked "A Little Rain (A Song for Pete)"

So here you go, enjoy this double shot of Arkells for the songs of the day!
