Song of the Day: May 08 2016 - "King of the Deep" from Our Debut Album

You may know Dave Shumka and Graham Clark from their hit podcast Stop Podcasting Yourself, from the comedy scene, or maybe even from their work at CBC Music. But what you may not know is both have been musicians, and they have merged their love of music, podcasts, and comedy (in that order) for a new show called Our Debut Album. 

Each episode in the monthly podcast follows the duo as they try to write a hit song in under an hour, until they have an album full of smash hits. And when I said "in that order" above, I meant that the Clark & Shumka are taking it seriously. No comedy songs; "Ween, or more serious" was their metric. 

The first episode came out this week where they write a 50's American Beach Rock jam called "King of the Deep", which they went on to record with Jay Arner.

Song of the Day: May 07, 2016 - "Companion" by Braids

Hot off their Juno winning album Deep In The Iris, Braids are releasing a brand new EP, appropriately titled Companion. You can check out the video for the title track, which was directed by Kevan Funk, who worked with the band on the videos for “Taste” and “Miniskirt” last year. 

Singer Raphaelle Standell-Preston has also written a powerful piece for Pitchfork on being a survivor of sexual abuse, and how it informed songs like "Companion", and "Miniskirt". I can't possibly do the article justice, so I urge you take a few minutes to read it here.

Song of the Day: May 06, 2016 - "Private School" by Arkells

New Arkells!!!!!!!!

And apparently everyone loved it so much this morning their Vevo page came crashing down!

The new song "Private School" from the upcoming album Morning Report (out August 5th!) is about social inequality and the lack of awareness on the part of those with more fortune.

To say I'm excited about the new album is an understatement, and I'm sure we'll be hearing some of the new songs over the summer when the boys head out to play some festivals. I took a peak at the tracklist (you can pre-order the album) and am beyond curious to hear what the song "Drake's Dad" sounds like!.

Song of the Day: May 05, 2016 - "Anybodys'" by Sam Weber

When the words "new music" followed by the name Sam Weber appeared in my inbox I was incredible excited.
I've seen Sam and his band perform live many times over the last year or so and have been anticipating this new release for some time now. The album will be called Valentina Nevada and to comes out at the end of the month on May 27th.

The band lists the album's influences as Jackson Browne, The Eagles, Neil Young & Joni Mitchell, which I totally get from today's Song Of The Day, and the first release, "Anybodys'", with maybe a bit of Randy Newman sound on the piano track.

Song of the Day: May 04, 2016 - "Nodisco!" by By Divine Right

By Divine Right is covering Depeche Mode's 1981 album Speak & Spell track for track and the another single, "Nodisco!", is out now.

The entire album of covers will be out on the 27th of this month, and based off of this first few tracks (hear "New Life" and "Just Can't Get Enough" as well) I'm pretty stoked for the rest!

Song of the Day: May 03, 2016 - "Below" by White Lung

In three days Vancouver's own White Lung will be releasing their new album Paradise and today we have their latest single (in video form as well) for you titled "Below".

Lead singer Mish Barber-Way, called the song her "Stevie-Nicks-meets-Celine Dion ballad" and we totally get that vibe.

Song of the Day: May 02, 2016 - "Push + Pull" by July Talk

This right here is my new favourite song. July Talk is back with a first tease at their new album with the song "Push + Pull".

The song starts with Leah Fay's lofty vocals over an almost disco beat before Peter Dreimanis' raw growl joins in for a chorus that punches you in the face. 

No details yet on whent he album is out, or even its title, but it has already jumped to the top of my most anticipated of '016.

Song of the Day: May 01, 2016 - "Don't Go" by Hannah Georgas

I have been eagerly anticipating new music from Hannah Georgas and now it's finally here! 

"Don't Go" is the brand new single from her upcoming album, For Evelyn which will be out later this summer on Dine Alone Records. 

The album is named after Hannah’s “compassionate, patient, kind and beautiful” 98-year-old grandmother and is once again produced by Holy Fuck's Graham Walsh. "Don't Go" is a hauntingly beautiful song, and I can't wait to hear the rest of the album.
