Song of the Day: April 15, 2016 - "Miracle" by The Darcys

April 15, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

"Be cool first, hate the new Darcys record now."

"First person to call "sell-out" gets a prize! [champagne emoji] [trophy emoji]"

The Darcys had been relentlessly hyping up their new single, "Miracle", all week on the social medias, until it finally hit our ears yesterday. Well, the studio recording was released to radio stations across the country (which you can/should request with the hashtag #IWANTAMIRACLE) but you can hear the song as they perform it live at The Edge below.

The new song sees the band shift from art-rock to a bit more art-pop, as they also dealt with some changes in the lineup. After their last album (the amazing Warring) half the band decided to quit, leaving Jason Couse & Wes Marskell not sure what to do. After some deliberation, they went on as a duo, taking the band in a new direction. Which you can clearly hear in "Miracle".

Song of the Day: April 14, 2016 - "Juniper" by Begonia

April 14, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

If you enjoy the harmonies of Chic Gamine, then you might just recognise the voice behind Begonia. It's the new solo project from Alexa Dirks, who took to the studio with Matts Schellenberg and Peters (of Royal Canoe) as producers for the upcoming release. And if the first song is any indication, it's going to be something you're going to want to keep an ear out for.

Watch the camera swirl around the band as Dirks' voice soars over an infectious bass groove in the video for "Juniper", performed live at Knox United Church in Winnipeg.

Song of the Day: April 13, 2016 - "Souvenir" by David Newberry

April 13, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

New Newberry!

I was excited earlier this week when I saw that David Newberry would be returning to Vancouver in June (on the 26th, along with Skye Wallace at the Rickshaw) and then today, we got a brand new song from him as well.

According to Newberry the song was the last song I wrote before he moved away from Vancouver, first one he recorded for his album Replacement Things, but it didn't make the cut.
I'm glad we get to hear it now. Check it out below and be sure to mark June 26th down in your calendar!

Song of the Day: April 12, 2016 - "Love and Loss" by Harold Malcolm

April 12, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

About a month ago at the beginning of March we got a single from Harold Malcolm (formerly of Portage & Main), but no word on an album.

Well, now we have a second single, and the knowledge that the debut album will come out at the end of this month!

Single number two is titled "Love and Loss", and despite the heavy title, the song is upbeat and dare I say pop-y!

Give it a listen below, and be sure to keep an eye out for the album at the end of the month.

Song of the Day: April 10, 2016 - "Domino" by Van Damsel

April 10, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Only two more weeks until Van Damsel's self-titled album finally comes out (you can pre-order it here) on April 22nd. I'm so excited to finally hear the the recordings (and be able to hear them whenever I want) that I've got to see performed live so much over the last year plus.

The latest single "Domino" is no exception; it's odd (in a good way) to be able to sing along to a chorus of a song that you're technically pressing play on for the first time, but that's just how catchy it is!

Check out the first two releases by clicking here, and hear "Domino" below:

Song of the Day: April 09, 2016 - "My Chinchilla" by CUB

April 09, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

As many people probably know, Christine and I know each other through the CBC Radio 3 community. In the almost-ten years that I've been listening to R3, it has lead directly to meeting a lot of cool people. From all over the country, but also here in Vancouver. Six years ago I was at the Museum of Vancouver for an event that Grant Lawrence and Dan Mangan were a part of when a guy came up to me and tentatively asked "Are you.... kirkofdoom?". I was, he admitted to recognising me from the R3 blog, and introduced himself. His name was Neil van Paridon, or nvp on the blog.

On March 27, Neil passed away after a four month battle with cancer. His memorial service is today, and that's why the Song of the Day is one of his favourites. Christine and I also wanted to share some words Grant Lawrence wrote on his instagram:

“RIP to the great Neil “NVP” van Paridon (centre) who tragically passed away on Easter Weekend in Vancouver from a brain tumour. Neil was one of the many amazing people who I have met through CBC Radio 3. He was a passionate listener and supporter, and an active, smart, kind, and very funny member of our unique and welcoming blog community. Neil was also an amateur CBC archivist, having more memorabilia and “merch” that we do at the station! Neil’s love and listening stretched all the way back to Brave New Waves, Nightlines, Realtime, RadioSonic, and eventually Radio 3, where he listened actively right up until our final day of live hosting a year ago (and beyond). NVP managed to beat “The System”, figuring out when songs would be played on R3 and for how often, and was a great member of the “YVR3” welcoming committee whenever anyone came to town. His friendship and kindness will be deeply missed and not forgotten. NVP is pictured here (wearing his homemade R3 Rock ‘n’ Roll Movie Club shirt “Dogs Wolves Noise Kick Ass” - a ridiculous Kim Fowley quote he blurted out on our show when Fowley attempted to describe rock ‘n’ roll) alongside friends and fellow Radio 3 listeners. Great times. Thanks for the friendship and support, NVP.”

Song of the Day: April 08, 2016 - "Wearing It" by Walrus

April 08, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

There is a new band on the Madic Record roster: Halifax based psych rockers Walrus!

Their new EP Goodbye Something is set for release on the 29th of this month, and their new single, and video, is out now, titled: "Wearing It".

The trippy video has shades of the 60's and the sound is familiar to that of Young Rival. Give the new single a listen, and if you're out east, they maybe be heading your way during their string of tour dates on that end of Canada.
