Song of the Day: March 07, 2016 - "Blue Wave" by Operators

March 07, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

The new album from Operators, Blue Wave, will be out in less than a month (April 1), and the band will be in Vancouver, performing at Fortune, on April 5th, so it was about time for a new single.

[Click here to hear the previous single "Cold Light" that was February 1st's SOTD.]

"Blue Wave" is both the name of the album, and the latest single and is a upbeat, dance-able track that will have you swaying in your seat. Check it out below.

Song of the Day: March 06, 2016 - "Last Of Our Kind" by Rykka

March 06, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

When I first heart the news, I had to read it three or four times, to actually process it.

Rykka is going to be competing in Eurovision.

If you're not familiar with it, The Eurovision Song Contest is the longest-running annual TV song competition. It's held among the member countries of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) since 1956.

"The Last Of Our Kind" is one of 43 entries, with the Swiss-Canadian Rykka representing, duh, Switzerland. The first two semi finals happen May 10 & 12, with the finals May 14.

Song of the Day: March 05, 2016 - "Why Do You Lie" by Harold Malcolm

March 05, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

A few years back, a duo called Portage & Main was tearing up Vancouver. They released a couple solid albums, but didn't quite get the kick outside the city limits, and quietly faded away. And while John Sponarski has been busy lending his talents to other bands, the other half of the duo had been a little quiet... until now.

Harold Malcolm debuted his solo project the other day with a song called "Why Do You Lie", a bouncy yet heartfelt song that is absolutely going to be stuck in my head all weekend.

No word yet on an album to go with it, but you can download the song for free by clicking right about here.

Song of the Day: March 04, 2016 - "Atomic Number" by case/lang/veirs

March 04, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Sometimes supergroups... well, they don't quite live up to the sum of their parts. But other times, boy do they ever. case/lang/veirs is the stunning combination of (you guessed it) Neko Case, k.d. lang, and Laura Veirs. The collaboration started as a whim when lang emailed the other two simple saying "I think we should make a record together."  And even though the three of them were acquaintances at best, Case and Veirs replied immediately to say yes, because of course they would.

The result is a 14-track self titled album, and if the lead single "Atomic Number" is any indication, it is going to be a magnificent display of their individual talents intertwining for something beautiful.

Song of the Day: March 02, 2016 - "I Will" by MAGNOLIA

March 02, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

It's been about a month since Vancouver's MAGNOLIA released her first single "Brother's Bother" from her upcoming LP, and she's just given us another taste with a second single called "I Will".

I found myself staring off out the window while listening to the song, wondering how nice it would be to have a warm sunshine breeze right now... Which is fitting as Stephanie happens to be in Australia at the moment, having some wonderful looking adventures - check out her travel blog that she started.

If she can't be in the same city as me, I'll just have to take these wonderful tunes she keeps releasing as consolation...

Song of the Day: March 01, 2016 - "Lights Go Out" by Del Barber & the No Regretzkys

March 01, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Back in December I saw a social media post from Winnipeg's Del Barber saying "Keep your stick on the ice, and your head on a swivel! I'm making a hockey record!" - my response was:
"Um. What?! Yes please!!!".

WELL, now we have the first single called "Lights Go Out", an album title The Puck Drops Here, and a release date April 15th...which is just before the NHL playoffs, and with the way the Canadian teams are performing right now, we'll need a pick-me-up.

The album will cover classics like Stompin' Tom Conners' "The Hockey Song", the Coach's Corner Theme song(!), and even "Rock and Roll Part 2" (which I will be glad to associate with someone other than Gary Glitter). There will also be some originals, with titles like "Hudson Bay Rules" and today's Song Of The Day "Lights Go Out", which you can hear below!
