Song[s] of the Day: January 23, 2016 - "Don't Tell Me How To Live" & "Things Get Better" by Monster Truck

January 23, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Monster Truck will hit the stage at the Commodore in just over a month, and have recently released another few singles from their upcoming album Sittin' Heavy (Feb 19).

Sometimes you just need a good, heavy, rock'n'roll song, and, like the last single "The Enforcer", Monster Truck delivers just that with both "Don't Tell Me How To Live" and "Things Get Better".

If this is any indication of the album, I can't wait to grab a beer, turn on the hockey game, and have Sittin' Heavy on in the background.

Song of the Day: January 22, 2016 - "Dreamers" by Willa

January 22, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

A little over a year ago, singer-songwriter Ali Milner transformed into the dark synth-pop Willa and released the song "Stay The Night". Now she's back with another brand new single, an anthemic electro-pop ear-worm called "Dreamers".

No word on an album or EP that these are leading up to, but based on the two songs, I am looking forward to hearing what's next.

(Also, while posting this I stumbled across a cover that Willa did of The Cardigan's "Lovefool" that I never knew existed, and now I am so glad it is in my life.)

3am Playlist #30: Yippee Ki Yay

January 21, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in 3am Playlist

With the recent reopening of the Yale Saloon and the upcoming launch party (that we are GIVING AWAY TICKETS TO - click here) I figured it was time for a playlist to match.

I've put together the artists that I'd love to hear perform on the Yale Saloon stage, songs that I'd stomp my white cowboy boots on the hardwood floor along to, and artists I can picture would kick some butt on the mechanical bull.

CLICK HERE to hear the playlist, and be sure to enter our contest to win 1 of 5 sets of ticket to the launch party, which will be a hellova hoedown from what I've read!

Oh and don't forget Corb Lund AND Daniel Romano will be in town next week at the Commodore on the 29th and 30th!

Song of the Day: January 21, 2016 - "Fool" by Basia Bulat

January 21, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

The new Basia Bulat new album Good Advice was already my most anticipated album of the year, based solely on how much I loved the lead single "Infamous" (seriously, it's one of those songs that gets better every time I hear it).

With the second single, "Fool", it just cements my anticipation as the heartbroken-sounding voice of Bulat sails over the chorus proclaiming "I'm still your fool"

Good Advice was produced by Jim James (yes, that Jim James) and will be out February 12 on Secret City. AND you can/should catch her live at Fortune Sound Club on February 25th.

Song of the Day: January 20, 2016 - "Get Dark" by The Zolas

January 20, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

I remember when The Zolas sang about Vancouver, and The Biltmore. Now they're too cool with songs about falling in love with New York, and getting dark in Toronto.

Jokes aside, the new song "Get Dark" is an upbeat, poppy tune, and judging by this song (and a few others I've heard live), this new album is going to be as much of a departure from Ancient Mars as that was from Tic Toc Tic.

Swooner will be out March 4th on Light Organ Records.

Song of the Day: January 19, 2016 - "The Depression Dance" by Jim Bryson

January 19, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Jim Bryson is set to release his newest album, Somewhere We Will Find Our Place, on February 19th, and has just released the first single from the record: "The Depression Dance".

This will be Bryson's first release since his collaboration with the Weakerthans (in 2010), and first solo release in about 9 years. Working with Charles Spearin and Shawn Everett on the recording, Bryson said in a statement: "This is a really important and special record for me and while I know all records have that, there was just something in the water when we recorded these songs."

Song of the Day: January 18, 2016 "I Do, Do You?" by HIGHS

January 18, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

While we still have to wait until April 8th for HIGHS' new album Dazzle Camouflage to drop, we're lucky enough to get another brand new awesome single! "I Do, Do You?" has the dreamy harmonies and summer vibes that we come to expect and love from the band, and adds to my excitement over the new album.

On top of that they just announced a tour during Feb/March with We Are The City, including a stop here in Vancouver on March 11th at the Imperial.

Check out the new music below, as well as the first song from the record, "Handsome Man", by clicking HERE.
