Song of the Day: December 06, 2015 - "Focus" by P'ARIS

December 06, 2015 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

The mysterious P'ARIS are back with a heartwrenching new tune. In keeping with their stream of guest vocalists, "Focus" features the powerful pipes of Willa soaring over twitchy synthpop.

And while the duo's secret identities are still known only to a few, they were very open on the song's meaning:

‘Focus' is a song about two people experiencing the loss of a pregnancy. There’s a very particular type of gentle empathy that both partners must offer each other when going through a miscarriage. It’s a strange type of loss, especially from a pragmatic standpoint - you haven't so much lost something as you have lost the idea of something. So in a way you’re mourning the loss of control over your own future, control over your body, your biology. And you’re also faced with the fact that you have failed at the one thing humans exist on earth to do. ‘Focus’ is about making sure the relationship doesn’t suffer while you’re each processing things in your own way

Song of the Day: December 05, 2015 - "Hello" by The Elwins (Adele cover)

December 05, 2015 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

The Elwins are no strangers to covering huge pop songs. "Countdown" by Beyoncé used to be a staple in their live sets, and they even recorded it in a live session with Luke Lalonde. But this time they set their sights on arguably a bigger pop superstar, as the foursome took a day off during their current North America tour to pop into the studio and record their version of Adele's "Hello".

What do you think? How do you think it compared to the original? Who would you want to hear The Elwins cover next?

Song of the Day: December 04, 2015 - "Sweet & Fine" by Crissi Cochrane

December 04, 2015 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Need something to warm you up on these chilly nights? How about the sweet soulful sounds of Crissi Cochrane. The Windsor-based singer/songwriter released a brand new song a few days ago, the smooth & sexy "Sweet & Fine", recorded at the aptly named Soul Lab.

Hopefully this is a tease for more new music in the new year, and maybe even that western tour some people (me) have been patiently waiting for?

3am Playlist #23: London (& France) Calling

December 03, 2015 by Christine McAvoy in 3am Playlist

I'm not exactly sure where I'll be in the world when you're reading this, but I think it's France.

As I've been telling you all week, I'm on my way to Rennes, France for the Trans Musicales Festival (click here to hear last week's playlist!). After that it's Paris for a few days and London for a week (I'll be seeing a few Canadian bands there too).

So I decided to put together a playlist of songs either about travel, bands with travel-related names, or to listen to on those many hours in transit. Click HERE to hear the playlist or on the image above.

Also, Chromeo's "Frequent Flyer" wasn't on their CBC Music page, but I found this awesome video for it below:

Song of the Day: December 03, 2015 - "Brian Jones (Death of the Rolling Stones)" by Marty Zylstra

December 03, 2015 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Don't let the title fool you, Marty Zylstra say this song isn't an ode to, or actually about, Brian Jones, but more of a parallel between what his bandmade call his "wasted life" and and modern relationship drama.

Death of youth, communication breakdowns, and modern technology are running themes in "Brian Jones (Death of the Rolling Stones)". Take a listen to the new single below!

Song of the Day: December 2, 2015 - "Five Minutes" by Her

December 02, 2015 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

I think this song had me in the first 4 seconds, but I listened to the (ironically) remaining 3:40mins of "Five Minutes" and loved it just as much.

Her, are still a brand new band, from what little I've been able to gather on them, though the musicians themselves have long established themselves in the French music scene (the two are formerly of The Popopopops).

Their first release, titled "Quite Like", is also an awesome song - you should listen to that on Soundcloud too, or, if you're not at work, check out the video - and definitely was the first step towards them gaining attention.

I honestly cannot wait to hear them live at the Trans Musicales festival...but for now, I'll listen to this on repeat. Oh, and they just released a video for the song as well, so you have even more to watch:

Song of the Day: December 01, 2015 - "The Ridge" by Sarah Neufeld

December 01, 2015 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Arcade Fire member/violinist Sarah Neufeld has just released the first single and title track from her new solo album The Ridge.

The sweeping and beautiful song also features (bandmate) Jeremy Gara on drums and clocks in at just over 8 minutes, but it is definitely easy to get wrapped up or lost in.

The album comes out on February 26th via Paper Bag Records, check the track out below:

Song Of The Day: November 30, 2015 - "Sophia" by Van Damsel

November 30, 2015 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Every few days I have Van Damsel's song "Best Of Everything" on a loop in my brain, so I got pretty damn excited when they recently released a new song, "Sophia", to join it there.

The band, who just won 3rd place, and $50,000!, in the Peak Performance Project finale, is set to release their self-titled LP in early 2016 and I cannot wait.

Check out "Sophia" below.
