Song of the Day: October 23, 2015 - "Broken Arrows" by The Matinée

October 23, 2015 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

The Matinée have a new EP out (Yay! Finally!) called Broken Arrows, so I thought we'd share the latest single from it, conveniently also titled "Broken Arrows"

This is the 3rd single to be released from the album (after "Call Of The Wild", and "Temper Temper" last week), and probably my favourite one from the record.

I'm not sure how we snagged so many artists releasing brand new music around the same time, just in time for THEN & NOW IV next week (Oct 28), but it should be a great night of music.

Song Of The Day: October 22, 2015 - "Slowly" by Jasper Sloan Yip

October 22, 2015 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

It was a no-brainer for me when deciding on a track for today for Jasper Sloan Yip, who will be performing at our "Then & Now" show at the Wise Hall on the 28th of October.

I met Jasper way back in 2009 when he became the 20,000 artist to sign up for CBC Radio 3, and won himself a recording session at CBC Vancouver.

I was hired by the ceeb to take some photos of the recording process and got to spend time in a studio for the first time. I can't find the photos online, but they exist somewhere...

I'm not sure what song Jasper is going to perform for his "THEN" track at the event, but "Slowly" is definitely an old one for me!

Song of the Day: October 21, 2015 - "Skin" by Little India

October 21, 2015 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Continuing the trend of Songs of the Day by the awesome bands performing at our Then & Now show show (Oct 28th), we present to you "Skin" by Little India off of their newly released acoustic EP called Miracle Skin.

It just so happens that they're performing tomorrow night as part of another charity show - this one is in support of their Peak Performance Project charity partner Mealshare. The EP sales, as well as the ticket sales from this show, are going toward the program of providing meals to those in need.

The show also features BESTiE, and Ark & Ocean, and if you needed an added bonus, the ticket includes a free Red Truck beer.

Check out the new song below, be sure to see the show tonight, and catch them acoustically at Then & Now on Oct 28th.

Song of the Day: October 20, 2015 - "Try" by Kaylee Johnston

October 20, 2015 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Starting today and running all the way until the 28th, the Songs of the Days are going to be dedicated to those playing our very own Then & Now show! And I can't think of a better way to start it with my favourite new discovery, Kaylee Johnston.

When I saw her at JP Marurice's Cover Up For The Planet show a couple weeks ago, my second thought was "I hope we can get her for Then & Now!" and as luck would have it, she not only said yes, but has some new music coming out as well!

Her debut album comes out next year, but for now she is teasing us with a few early singles. The latest is called "Try" and it is a ridiculously catchy pop song, with her stellar voice soaring over the chorus.

She'll be one of the performers at next week's Then & Now show, of course, or if you are not that patient, catch her tonight at the Media Club opening for Tyler Ward!

Song of the Day: October 18, 2015: "Skeleton" by Unalaska

October 18, 2015 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Sometimes when two friends from other bands come together to form a side project, you get something that doesn't quite live up to either band. But other times, you get Unalaska.

Zachary Gray of The Zolas and Brasstronaut's Edo Van Breemen have a pretty long history of friendship and collaboration, and now they have taken that to the next level by teaming up for a new project full of eerily haunting synth and catchy guitars; just about the perfect marriage of their two respective bands.

Their debut EP, simply titled Unalaska, came out this past Friday on Light Organ Records and is something you should probably put in your earholes as soon as possible.

(Also, that "If They Mated" photo of Edo and Zach is going to haunt my dreams for weeks)

Song of the Day: October 17, 2015 - "Told A Lie To My Heart" by Harrow Fair

October 17, 2015 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

I literally said "Whoa!" out loud when this song started by new power duo group Harrow Fair. The recording is a cover of Hank Williams' song "Told A Lie To My Heart" but you might not even recognize it, in a (very) good way. Dark, gritty, and soaring, it could have been taken off of the Deadwood soundtrack.

The band is made up of Andrew Penner of Sunparlour Players and Miranda Mulholland of, well, many things including Great Lake Swimmers, Belle Starr and her own solo work!

Apparently they're putting the finishing touches on a record that will come out in 2016, and honestly I can't wait to hear it. And if you need to hear more, there's a second video they filmed with BRBRTFO called "Bite The Way" - click here for that.
