October 19, 2015 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

It's ELECTION DAY! and if you're not awake yet, just listen to this and you will be!

METZ released a new song called "Eraser" (listen below) and announced a new 7" of two singles: Eraser/ Pure Auto - which will be pressed on green vinyl and only 1000 copies will be made.

More info on the release can be found HERE (including pre-ordering). The band is currently touring in the UK, and then will head to the states, followed by Australia!

Song of the Day: October 18, 2015: "Skeleton" by Unalaska

October 18, 2015 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Sometimes when two friends from other bands come together to form a side project, you get something that doesn't quite live up to either band. But other times, you get Unalaska.

Zachary Gray of The Zolas and Brasstronaut's Edo Van Breemen have a pretty long history of friendship and collaboration, and now they have taken that to the next level by teaming up for a new project full of eerily haunting synth and catchy guitars; just about the perfect marriage of their two respective bands.

Their debut EP, simply titled Unalaska, came out this past Friday on Light Organ Records and is something you should probably put in your earholes as soon as possible.

(Also, that "If They Mated" photo of Edo and Zach is going to haunt my dreams for weeks)

Song of the Day: October 17, 2015 - "Told A Lie To My Heart" by Harrow Fair

October 17, 2015 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

I literally said "Whoa!" out loud when this song started by new power duo group Harrow Fair. The recording is a cover of Hank Williams' song "Told A Lie To My Heart" but you might not even recognize it, in a (very) good way. Dark, gritty, and soaring, it could have been taken off of the Deadwood soundtrack.

The band is made up of Andrew Penner of Sunparlour Players and Miranda Mulholland of, well, many things including Great Lake Swimmers, Belle Starr and her own solo work!

Apparently they're putting the finishing touches on a record that will come out in 2016, and honestly I can't wait to hear it. And if you need to hear more, there's a second video they filmed with BRBRTFO called "Bite The Way" - click here for that.

Naturally after the week the Blue Jays had SOMEONE had to cover this song, and I'm so stoked it was Zeus!

There's not much more to say that this couldn't say:

Game time today is 5PM Pacific, listen to the song and get fired up!

Song of the Day: October 15, 2015 - "Escape Artist" by Library Voices

October 15, 2015 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Hot off the heels of their last single release ("Zzyzx") Library Voices has put out another track on their Soundcloud from their upcoming album Lovish.

"Escape Artist" is the 3rd release from the album that is set to debut on November 6th (and at this rate, we'll get the whole album by then!).

Just like the first two songs, the melody is catchy and destined to be another earworm, but all three are completely different and can stand on their own. Once again this makes me excited to hear the rest of the album and what the band has been cooking up.

Take a listen below (it features even more of my favourite, saxophone!) and check out the other two singles if you haven't already!

Song of the Day: October 14, 2015 - "The Waitress" by Del Barber

October 14, 2015 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Happy Birthday Del!

It just so happens that tonight's show at the Fox Cabaret, with Fortunate Ones, coincides with Del Barber's birthday, so obviously I had to pick him for our SOTD!

With a huge catalog of music to choose from, I decided to choose one of my favourite live sessions of Del, filmed by Benjamin James Caldwell (an excellent musician himself) of Moon Mountain Sessions.

They shot this video under an overpass while both happened to be in Australia, and it's pretty magical. Take a listen, and be sure you're at the show at the Fox tonight and wish Del a Happy Birthday!

Song of the Day: October 13, 2015 - "Washed-Up Rock Star Factory Blues" by Corb Lund

October 13, 2015 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Corb Lund just announced two shows for January here in Vancouver at the Commodore (29 & 30), on the heels of his newly released album Things That Can't Be Undone.

I've given the album a listen and really enjoyed it, particularly today's SOTD, "Washed-Up Rock Star Factory Blues" - just the title made me smile.

The album is classic Corb, with a few more twists, definitely give this one a go.
