3am Playlist #9: Mini Donuts & Rollercoasters

August 20, 2015 by Christine McAvoy in 3am Playlist

The Pacific National Exhibition (PNE!) kicks off this Saturday, and with it are free shows for the next few weeks (included with admission).

The Mosaic Music Stage has an all Canadian line up with some fresh names and local favourites. And over at the Summer Night Concerts stage they have some international acts (Boys II Men! Beach Boys!) and bands like The New Pornographers and Sloan are also performing.

This week's playlist celebrates the bands that will grace the stages over the PNE's 2015 run, and hopefully you get your fill of music, fried food, and rides! CLICK HERE (or the image above) to hear the playlist!

Song Of The Day: August 20, 2015 - "Stockholm" In-Flight Safety

August 20, 2015 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Last month I was reminiscing about how much I enjoyed the In-Flight Safety song "Destroy" and they just released another single titled "Stockholm" from their album Conversationalist last week.

Apparently they are busy working on new material that will be released this fall as a singles package with "some B-Sides and tracks they’ve recorded since the release of Conversationalist".

Have a listen to "Stockholm" below, and keep an eye out for the music video which is set to drop soon.

Song Of The Day: August 19, 2015 "Mate" Gang Signs

August 19, 2015 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

For the amount of times I've seen Vancouver's Gang Signs live, it's hard to believe they're just about to release their FIRST LP!

Geist arrived on October 2nd through File Under Music, and "Mate" their first single was just released, with the accompanying video, which you can see/hear below.

The band performs on the 22nd of August (this Saturday) with Fucked Up, and DOOMSQUAD at the Wise Hall.

Last week I got 3 emails in a row announcing a Hey Rosetta! fall tour with Yukon Blonde, and got excited every time another one popped up.

Hey Rosetta!, and Yukon Blonde perform at the Vogue Theatre on November 6th (Happy Early Birthday to me!) and to get YOU excited for wherever you'll be seeing them, here's a live video of HR! performing their song "Gold Teeth".

Song Of The Day: August 17, 2015 - "Red Lights" Shane Koyczan & The Short Story Long

August 17, 2015 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Shane Koyczan just announced a new album with The Short Story Long entitled Debris that will be out on September 23, 2015!

The first track, "Red Lights", off of the album was released recently, and additionally, Shane wrote a poem to describe the album:

If I ever filmed a film
inspired by an album I recorded
this would be the one

this would be the one
I'd have pitched to Kubrick
under the challenge of
make one of these tracks
a short film...

... I love this album.

Hear the track below, and check out the tour dates on his website.

Song Of The Day: August 16, 2015 - "Interior Light" Young Rival

August 16, 2015 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Something must be in the water across Canada, because another band that hasn't released music since 2012 has just announced a new album, and dropped a single: Young Rival.

The song "Interior Light" will appear on the album by the same name on October 16th on Paper Bag Records, and the band will be heading out on tour with label mates Born Ruffians.

The bands don't land in Vancouver until November 21 at The Imperial - more info on our concert calendar - so hopefully the new single will tide you over until the album, and the album will keep you excited until the fall tour! Check it out below:

Song of the Day: August 15, 2015 - "Ontario Morning" The Most Serene Republic

August 15, 2015 by Kirk Hamilton

It has been six years(!) since the last full length album from The Most Serene Republic, but that's all going to change on November 13 when they release their brand new album, Mediac.

And it sounds like they haven't missed a beat; "Ontario Morning" is filled with soaring horns and catchy hooks making it a late contender for Song Of The Summer. It is going to be in heavy rotation in my brain, anyway.

Song Of The Day: August 14, 2015 - "Trust" Half Moon Run

August 14, 2015 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

It seems like every band that you've wanted new material from/that hasn't put any music out in years is coming out of the woodwork!

So when I heard that Half Moon Run was going to follow up their 2012 album Dark Eyes with a new record called Sun Leads Me On, on October 23rd, I was excited once again.

They've released a single entitled "Trust" from the forthcoming 13-track album, which you can hear below. It's a little different from the Half Moon Run we know from Dark Eyes, but I've already listened to it about a dozen times and can't wait for the full album, and subsequent tour!
