Song(s) of the Day: June 17, 2016 - Unmake EP by Dan Mangan

June 17, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Surprise! New Dan Mangan!

Well, it might not quite be a surprise if you listened to a recent episode of Comedy Bang Bang with Dan Mangan sitting in and playing a few songs (I highly recommend the episode, as the brilliant Natasha Leggero & Riki Lindhome are also on it) since he teased it there.

The EP is some new stuff, some redone old stuff (a version of "Forgettery" with Tegan Quin) and a Robyn cover. You can check out the YouTube playlist below. On first listen, at 12:39 am, my favourite is "Race To The Bottom"

Song of the Day: June 16, 2016 - "Stereo" by Shred Kelly

June 16, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Sing To The Night may have come out a few months ago, but Shred Kelly is still hard at work touring and making videos.

The brand new one for "Stereo" shows off the band's raucous live shows, juxtaposed by sleepy car rides through some Canadian scenery. And if you're wanting to catch them live (you should) the band is doing the festival circuit this summer, with all the dates on their website.

(And, as an aside, I can't help but smile as the train goes by at the end, considering the first time I saw/met Shred Kelly was on the cross country musical train trip Tracks on Tracks)

Song of the Day: June 15, 2016 - "Fair Enough" by The Pack A.D.

June 15, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

The Pack A.D. showcased a whole bunch of new songs at their two night stand at the Cobalt last month in Vancouver, and we now have another single from the new LP Positive Thinking.

"Fair Enough" is about creating barriers against reality, and the comforts of escapism. So strap in and have a listen before the album comes out (August 13th).

Song of the Day: June 14, 2016 - "The Safe Word (is Don't)" by The Charm Offensive

June 14, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Warning: Only listen to this song if you want it stuck in your head for the next 13 hours or so.

Hatch Benedict (of Sex With Strangers [the band]) has teamed up with Trish Kelly for a brand new band called The Charm Offensive.

On their debut single, "The Safe Word (is Don't)" the duo trades vocals for an 80s-soaked electro pop jam. Listen below... at your own earworm-y peril.

Song of the Day: June 13, 2016 - "Prayer For The Dying" by Lisa Hannigan

June 13, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

It's been five years since we last had a new album from the Irish singer-songwriter Lisa Hannigan, so I was surprised and delighted when "Prayer For The Dying" popped up the other day.

The hauntingly beautiful, slow-burning song is the first single from the new album At Swim, which comes out August 19.

Song of the Day: June 12, 2016 - "Vancouver" by Mobina Galore

June 12, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

If you need something to get you going on a lazy weekend morning, just crank the new Mobina Galore song, "Vancouver".

The Winnipeg alt-punk-pop duo of Jenna Priestner and Marcia Hanson released the song last week as a tease for their upcoming full length, Feeling Disconnected, which has no release date other than "upcoming".

Hear Vancouver calling below on their bandcamp!

Song of the Day: June 11, 2016 - "Rock N Roll" by Bend Sinister

June 11, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Long Live Rock N Roll!

When I saw Bend Sinister a few weeks ago, they ended with a song that I knew was going to be an instant classic. A night-ending singalong. Your new summer jam.

That song was "Rock N Roll", an anthem to the genre that needs to be cranked loud. So... what are you waiting for?

Song of the Day: June 10, 2016 - "Waste" by Hannah Georgas

June 10, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

More new Hannah Georgas (and more saxophone!).

We're creeping ever closer to the release of her next album (June 24th) titled For Evelyn, and we've been given another stellar track from it called "Waste". Originally this was a ballad on the piano, but it's final incarnation included the horns and funky danceable track. I feel like you can't go wrong either way when it comes to Hannah Georgas (you DO do right in our eyes, Hannah).

You can pre-order her new album on her website (click here), and see her at various shows across the country this summer (Fun Fact: I'm actually about 30mins away from her right now in Ontario as she's in the middle of a 3 night stint at Jackson Triggs Winery with Sam Roberts), including Khatsahlano in Vancouver on July 9th.
