Song Of The Day: October 06, 2015 - "That's Chemistry" by Young Rival

October 06, 2015 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Young Rival just released another single titled "That's Chemistry", off of their upcoming album Interior Light. The band has produced another earmworm that will have you swaying in your seat (and hopefully at a venue near you soon - they play the Imperial on November 21st).

The album comes out on the 16th of October, and will be the band's first since 2012. So far the wait has been worth it between this single and, the title track off the album, it's shaping up to be a doozy. Take a listen below.

Land You Love A song concerning the upcoming 2015 federal election. Performed by Hey Rosetta! (NL) & Yukon Blonde (BC) Written by Tim Baker Camera A and edit by Phil Maloney Camera B - Justin Tobin Thanks to Joey Sadler for all the help. Please visit votetogether.ca and vote to avoid another tragic Harper government. land you love what have we lost, poisoned, or crushed? what highest hopes were stolen from us? what holy rolling hills were cut into dust? what voices were stifled, silenced, scared and carried off? do you think we can hide? (no) put your head in the sand? (no) do you think we can ride it out? well some of us can’t who’s after taking our wages and our trust? our women forsaken, forgotten, and lost our holy rolling hills, our waters, our crops are hid in their bills, pushed through and hushed up and sold off like pawns do they think they can hide them? (no) keep our heads in the sand? (no) do they think they can ride it out for another one? well we say they can’t there is a time (oh) when a change has to come (oh) for you to speak your mind (oh) for you to fight for the land you love when i was a child, i sang the anthem with pride it stood for justice, peace, and human rights it stood for the holy rolling hills and a home for all walks of life and it must again, for my children, and theirs do you think they can hide? (no) put their heads in the sand? no you think they can ride it out? well some of em can’t no now is the time (oh) when a change has to come (oh) for you to draw a line (oh) and to fight for the land you love

Song Of The Day: October 04, 2015 - "Land You Love" by Hey Rosetta! and Yukon Blonde

October 04, 2015 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

With just over 2 weeks to go until election day, and with advanced voting starting up on Friday, today's Song Of The Day came at a great time.

Written by Tim Baker, performed by both Hey Rosetta! and Yukon Blonde (conveniently on tour together soon), and shot at two different locations, "Land You Love" is about the upcoming election, and our country.

Click here to see the lyrics as a whole.

There have been a LOT of election-related musical events in Vancouver over the last few days, and on Saturday the 10th, there is another one. "Voting #InAdvance" will host bus-based concerts with the likes of Dan Mangan, Shawn from The Harpoonist & The Axe Murderer, and more, that will shuttle people to advanced voting locations, to cast their votes. - Check out the event by clicking here, and please remember to vote!

Song of the Day: October 03, 2015 - "Got You Well" by Gabrielle Papillon

October 03, 2015 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Gabrielle Papillon is one of those artists that I have always been aware of, but never really delved into. But after listening to "Got You Well", that is going to have to change.

It's a haunting song that builds with a chilling intensity, taken from her album The Tempest of Old, which was out earlier this year. Papillon recorded it with producer Daniel Ledwell at Echo Lake studio in Nova Scotia.

Song Of The Day: October 02, 2015 - "Bitter Memories" by Bahamas

October 02, 2015 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

One of my favourite albums of 2014 was Bahamas Is Afie (by Bahamas, obviously), and I LOVE the song "Bitter Memories".

Lucky for us, there's a new video out featuring thousands of drawings of Bahamas singing the song. It's quite beautiful and I can only imagine the time and work that went into creating it. Take a look and listen below.

Song Of The Day: October 01, 2015 - "Rope of Sand" by Miranda Mulholland

October 01, 2015 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

I do not know if flame-haired singer/fiddler Miranda Mulholland is a fan of the cancelled-too-soon animated show Clone High or not, but the name "Rope Of Sand" always makes me think of that.

BUT BESIDES THAT, the song is a gorgeous showcase of Miranda's voice, and a love letter to one of her "musical heroes, Kate Bush." It's out on her own label, Roaring Girl Records.

Rope of Sand by Miranda Mulholland find it on iTunes here - https://itunes.apple.com/ca/album/rope-of-sand-single/id1031835409 Produced by Andrew Penner Video shot & edited by Miranda Mulholland

Song Of The Day: September 30, 2015 - "Zzyzx" by Library Voices

September 30, 2015 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

I yelled "SAXAMAPHONE!" so loud when this song started. I'm already completely obsessed with this track, and am more excited than ever for the new Library Voices album, Lovish, out Nov 6th.

The new song feels like one part Huey Lewis & The News (maybe "Hip To Be Square"?) meets The Romantics' "What I Like About You", but totally Library Voices.

Now to sit patiently for a) the album, b) to hear this live. Click below to enjoy!
