July Talk @ Commodore -- 11/23/16

November 24, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in live shows

The first time I saw July Talk live was on this very stage, at the Commodore. They were opening for Matt Mays, I didn't really know who they were, but I was instantly blown away. In the three years since, I had seen them a few more times, but it seemed always as the opener, never headlining a show. Until now, as they returned for the first of TWO! sold out shows back at the legendary Commodore Ballroom.

With them on tour was Dartmouth's Adam Baldwin -- another friend of Mays -- as opener. Baldwin has a very East Coast Rock sound, playing songs off his latest album No Telling When. Highlights included the high energy "Battlescar", the motivating "Daylight", and my favourite of the set, an older song "Burning Man" which starting soft and building to an incredibly chaotic wall of sound. And it all came to a close with a fun cover of Talk Talk's "It's My Life" to finish out the set.
Baldwin had a great emotional intensity on stage, with strong songwriting behind the rockin' songs, and I am already looking forward to the next time he's on this side of the country.

After the break, it was the five members of July Talk taking the stage, walking out to the familiar crunchy guitar of "Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!" from Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds (as if I wasn't already won over enough by them). Fronted by the duelling vocals of Peter Dreimanis and Leah Fay, with guitarist Ian Docherty, bassist Josh Warburton, and Danny Miles on drums, the lighting almost making it look like the band was in black & white, fitting for them.
They kicked off with the first song from the new album Touch, "Picturing Love", Peter's gruff rasp with Leah's sweet yet powerful voice blended magnificently over the whiskey-soaked bluesy rock 'n' roll from the band. And it's not just their voices, their on-stage chemistry together is second to none, both getting in each others faces (sometimes literally) or Leah draping an arm around Peter. They both also went into the crowd; Peter to crowdsurf while playing guitar, and Leah stealing hats and kissing hands from the front row.
Their set featured a range from their new album and self-titled debut. Many of the older songs had people singing along, like the manic "Guns + Ammunition" and "Summer Dress". Other highlights included my favourite off the new album, the sexually charged "Lola + Joseph"; a bit of a more low-key and haunting tune "Strange Habit"; and "Headsick" which the dynamo Leah introduced by screaming it was a song about "losing your goddamn fucking mind!!!"
After a solid hour, they brought the main set to a close with "Paper Girl" before the requisite encore (not that the crowd wasn't clamouring for it). This time the stage was bathed in red light for the slow burning title track "Touch" before one last explosive song, "The Garden" to leave everyone's ears ringing.

Each time I see July Talk live, I am more impressed by their incredible energy. Even though their second show tomorrow night is sold out, if you have any way of getting in to see them, I would suggest you do it.

Weekly Photo Roundup - November 23, 2016 ft. Rykka, Dune Rats, Daughters, Her, Hannah Epperson

Weekly Photo Roundup for the (two) week(s) preceding November 23, 2016

I missed last week's roundup because I was away in Seattle shooting a show (Her) that you can see in the gallery above. I saw Her at the Trans Musicales festival last year in France, and they were only going as far as Seattle so I made the trek.

Also last week I shot for Exclaim and somehow managed to go to the Biltmore instead of the Cobalt, so I just ended up shooting both the Dune Rats, as well as Daughters.

Rykka made her return to Vancouver and put on a hell of a trampoline show, and Hannah Epperson finally came home to a pack, and remarkably silent, crowd at the Fox.

Also this week was the Spice Girls vs Backstreet Boys concert - I didn't include photos because you can see a gallery here, along with Kirk's recap of the show.

Check out the concert calendar for what is coming up this week!

Hannah Epperson @ Fox Cabaret -- 11/18/16

November 21, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in live shows

After the recent release of her new album Upsweep, Hannah Epperson returned home to Vancouver to celebrate at the Fox Cabaret.

I got to the early show a little late, catching the last half of opener Holy Hum, the solo project from Andrew Lee of In Medias Res. Spacey synth drones paired with his electric guitar set a dark mood, while fitting imagery being projected behind him; like a slow zoom in to the earth from orbit, or waves crashing in the ocean.
There was a bit of an awkward ending, as Andrew did the typical pre-last-song "thanks for coming" spiel, but the person in charge of sound must have misheard, and turned the lights and house music back on, thinking it was over. Lee managed to grab their attention thought and finish off with one more song.

After a very quick turnaround (one of the few good things about curfewed shows) Hannah Epperson was on stage, backed by the two members of Omhouse, the other opening band I missed. Starting off with "Cat's Cradle", Epperson filled the theatre with beautiful violin loops & plucking, her fragile voice lilting over the rapt audience. She played older songs like the haunting and powerful "We Will Host A Party", and of course new ones Upsweep like the transformative "Story" and the heartwrenching "Farthest Distance".
Between songs, Hannah chatted with her charmingly awkward (or awkwardly charming?) banter, mostly thanking everyone for not only being there, but being so quiet and attentive; a feat that is near-impossible for crowd in Vancouver, especially club shows. But Hannah Epperson is one of the very, very few musicians who I have seen with the ability to silence the room with just their music.
With the curfew in mind, Epperson played right up until the end of the show, without doing the faux-encore bit, leaving the crowd to go home full of awe.

Spice Girls vs Backstreet Boys @ Biltmore -- 11/17/16

November 20, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in live shows

It's been about a year since the last David Vertesi-helmed tribute night, but the wait was worth it. While past nights centred around one musician (Phil Collins, Michael Jackson, Paul Simon) and featured a revolving door of lead singers, this one was a little... different. It still featured ten local musicians, but instead of all filling the shoes of one legendary musician, they each had their own role to play as the night pitted two 90s pop icons against each other; Spice Girls vs Backstreet Boys.

On the Boys side, they had Omar Khan as AJ, Tom Van Deursen (The Boom Booms) as Nick, JP Maurice as Brian, Benedict Marsh as Howie, and the man himself, David Vertesi (Hey Ocean) as Kevin. And for the Girls, there was Ashleigh Ball (Hey Ocean) as Baby Spice, Tonye Aganaba as Scary Spice, Kaylee Johnston as Ginger Spice, Narai Dawn (Star Captains) as Sporty Spice, and Louise Burns as Posh Spice. Each musician not only dressed the part (and put on a fake accent if necessary), but they also learned some sweet dance moves. Or, in some cases, probably still knew them all these years later. They were backed by brothers Mike and Dave Young on bass and keys, respectively, Tristan Paxton on guitar, Raphael Geronimo on percussion, and the inimitable Johnny Andrews on drums.

Weekly Photo Roundup - November 9, 2016 ft. JPNSGRLS, Louise Burns, The Darcys, Hannah Georgas, The Matinee, The Sheepdogs

November 09, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Weekly Photo Roundup

Weekly Photo Roundup for the week preceding November 9, 2016

November has been crazy busy so far with shows and there are even more coming up!

Last week saw two free (win-your-way-in) shows at the Roxy, featuring JPNSGRLS on a Day Of The Dead party, and The Matinee, and The Sheepdogs playing to a completely packed house.

I also sincerely hope you managed to get to the Commodore to see Hannah Georgas perform again. With The Darcys, and Louise Burns opening up, it was an overwhelmingly awesome show. - Read Kirk's review of it here - I agree with all of it, and would like to add the Hannah Georgas definitely made me cry (at least once) that night.

Check out the concert calendar for what is coming up this week!
